Delcath Systems Announces Presentation of Data at World Conference on Interventional Oncology Company's Regional Delivery of High Dose Chemotherapy Highlighted as a Potential Alternative to Systemic Chemotherapy in Untreatable Liver Cancer
Drawing from the results of 182 successful percutaneous hepatic perfusion treatments on 74 patients treated under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between Delcath and the NCI, Dr. Pingpank discussed the toxicity profiles, pharmacokinetic analysis and the appearance of efficacy in patients with diffuse hepatic malignancies receiving Percutaneous Hepatic Perfusion (PHP) with the Delcath System. The presentation chronicled patients whose hepatic disease was too extensive for resection, ablation, or embolization strategies. Dr. Pingpank noted that regional delivery of high dose chemotherapy is a potential alternative to systemic chemotherapy for patients with nonresectable hepatic malignancies, and offers the potential of an increased therapeutic index for cytotoxic agents such as Melphalan. These studies are testing whether PHP with Melphalan demonstrates efficacy in the treatment of liver cancer from a variety of histologies and provides evidence for this treatment as a viable investigative approach for a variety of other cytotoxic and biologic agents. "These presentations are exciting to us as Dr. Pingpank's discussions focused on the excellent safety profile, the increased therapeutic index for cytotoxic agents such as Melphalan and the reproducible nature of Delcath Systems' procedure," commented Richard L. Taney, Delcath's President and Chief Executive Officer. "Venues such as these, before an audience of thought leaders in interventional oncology, expand the awareness of our technology among our target physician group, thus increasing potential patient referrals to our active clinical trials and setting the stage for eventual commercialization. The interest generated by these presentations at international conferences points to the growing acceptance by oncologists of regional therapy as a meaningful tool in the battle against cancer. We continue to believe that the Delcath System is the best method for the regionalized treatment of tumors in the liver and see the growing acceptance of regional therapies as confirmation of our business plan to continue development of expanded applications of our technology. We appreciate the NCI's continued enthusiasm for the Delcath PHP treatment and for presenting these very exciting results." About Delcath Systems, Inc.
